Abdenour Zahzah’s FRANTZ FANON, the closing film of Cinéma du réel 2024, opens in cinemas on Wednesday 23 July.
French Algeria, 1953. At the Blida-Joinville hospital, Frantz Fanon, a young black psychiatrist, is trying to cure Algerians of their alienations when war breaks out in his department. Shot entirely on location at the Blida-Joinville psychiatric hospital that Frantz Fanon ran as the Algerian war was breaking out, Abdenour Zahzah’s film sheds light on the genesis of the anti-colonial commitment of the author of Peaux noires, masques blancs.
