Cinema, a dynamic way of inhabiting the world
The out-of-competition programme confronts contemporary documentary cinema with its history and reflects the diversity of filmmakers’ approaches. The public is invited to explore the territory of cinema along a different path each year, telling parts of its history.
Luke Fowler
Rejecting historical, aesthetic, and narrative constraints, celebrating the margins with Luke Fowler.
Born in 1978, he is a central figure in the Glasgow art scene. A central part of his production focuses on the portrayal of radical figures, such as avant-garde composer and political activist Cornelius Cardew, psychiatrist R.D. Laing, and Marxist historian Edward Palmer Thompson.
Jumana Manna
What colonisation does to bodies and territories with Jumana Manna.
Palestinian filmmaker and visual artist. Her films explore how forms of power — economic, political, colonial — condition human and plant life, marking landscapes and bodies. Her cinema reveals the paradox between a reality in ruins and life that continues to regenerate.
The palestinian people and their resistance
In collaboration with Jumana Manna, a programme designed to help viewers ‘learn to see’ the Palestinian people and their resistance, and explore a part of their history.
Ecofeminism at the intersection of struggles
A program of films – with Five Years Diaries by Anne-Charlotte Robertson and the Indian group Yugantar (Sudesha) and others – will echo Festival Conversations #7 focused on ecofeminist thought and action.
Focus on participatory practices in cinema
Just as there are amateur practices in painting and music, there is also amateur practice in
cinema. It is this practice that we want to examine, asking: what does cinema do for these amateur
filmmakers?
- A screening will be devoted to several films made in detention facilities. Featuring: Lucarne directed by Ulysse Sorabella at the Bois D’Arcy Detention Centre, L’Éternité directed by Sébastien Betbeder as part of a workshop held at the Saint-Martin-de-Ré Central Prison, Baumettes Studio directed by Hassan Ferhani with the Lieux fictifs association at Les Baumettes in Marseille
- A special screening in collaboration with the Cinémathèque idéale des banlieues du monde (Ideal Film Library of the World’s Suburbs) focusing on the restoration of the film Le Garage directed by the Groupe Mohamed.
