WRITING AND READING DOCUMENTARY FILM

In collaboration with Périphérie

During various meetings, both at Cinéma du réel and at the documentary film meetings at Périphérie, we highlight the contradictions between the way filmmakers think about and make their documentary films and the expectations (real or imagined) of funding bodies. It is this difficulty in writing about and reading documentary cinema that we will be devoting our time to reflection and debate.

On the one hand, we will discuss the evolution of the demands placed on authors when writing their projects, and how these demands fit in with working practices. We will also examine how documentary cinema is viewed by the committees that support fiction and documentary films, and how the specificities and uniqueness of the creative process are taken into account. We hope that following this meeting, a joint working group with the institutions can be set up to draw up a charter that will enable documentary cinema to find its rightful place.
