The many image-making technologies available today, including AI, are cause for concern. Faced with these demands for perfection and mainstream appeal, filmmakers are using their subversive techniques to create a counterforce in direct cinema that collides with reality in a new, political and poetic way.
This is not a debate about generative AI, as these artificially generated images are not subject to chance or improvisation and are based on biased algorithms.
Rather, we want to question poor images, those that have circulated so much that they have been emptied of their substance, or those from surveillance camera videos, taken as raw material and removed from their primary function.
Discussion prepared and moderated by Marie-Gabrielle Fabre, Manuela Frésil et Juliette Steimer – Filmmakers and members of Addoc.
