The Pedro Costa event: In Vanda's room, 20 years on

Masterclass Pedro Costa

150 min

Pedro Costa, a Portuguese filmmaker, former student of António Reis and close to film directors Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet and Chantal Akerman, made his first film, "
O Sangre" (Blood), in 1989. Most of his oeuvre explores lives stretched between Cape Verde and Portugal, particularly the heart of Lisbon’s Fontainhas district. From one film to another, his heroes – Vanda, Ventura, Vitalena Varela... – meet and answer each other. Pedro Costa’s cinema overwhelms the spectator and constantly challenges the relationship between fiction and documentary.
