On this 34th edition, Cinéma du réel highlights the work of Susana de Sousa Dias, Dick Fontaine, John Gianvito, Raúl Ruiz and Mario Ruspoli.

- Exploring Documentary : Combatants
Exploring Documentary pays tribute to the filmmakers who have fought and continue to fight on liberation fronts, using deadly weapons (rifles, machine guns), non-deadly weapons (cameras, tracts…) or the two together. Some filmmakers are on the front line, others return with activists, alive, dead, immortalized, or directly support the struggles by relaying images filmed by the fighters.

- A nous la vie! / Riprendiamoci la vita!
During the political effervescence in the Italy of the 1970s, filmmakers, activists and artists embraced film and the new medium of video. Be it the more experienced filmmakers like Pier Paolo Pasolini or Vittorio De Seta, the master of Italian documentary, the most influential figures of cinema counterculture such as Alberto Grifi, or the new generation of filmmakers like Marco Bellocchio, the whole of Italian cinema engaged with political passion and utopia in order to “seize hold of life”.

After Music in Motion and Hors scèn programmes in 2012 and 2011, Cinéma du réel continues to explore the complex relationships between music and documentary with an insight into the work of Dick Fontaine, a preview screening of three unreleased films and some live music.
